Many of you have heard about the upcoming protest and No Attendance Strike. While many community members are onboard and are actively voicing their support, some are hesitant. Some support this movement but are reluctant to participate. We have heard the following concerns and want to answer them.
Sadly, this question has been asked quite a bit. We do not think that our educators would ever hold a grudge against children. As long as we remain respectful and continue to give back to our school, there is no reason any relationships have to change. We love our teachers and staff at our Elementary schools. They were not a part of the decision to establish the new Intermediate School.
Students are allowed up to 15 unexcused absences per year and are allowed 3 unexcused absences in a 4-week period. It is common for families to take their children out of school for an unexcused absence for personal reasons. It is important to stay within the state requirements but the impact of not having an Intermediate School at TISD will be more impactful than missing 2 days of school.
This issue impacts especially working parents, the commute time to Tomball Innovation Center will be very detrimental if implemented. Parents who are working from home or staying at home will hopefully signup to help where needed. If not, you can keep your children home until attendance is taken and then you can send your kids to school around 10:30am.
We have several former teachers who are in support of and participating in this No Attendance strike, and they have said that if the teachers are aware of the event in advance (which they are), they will be able to plan around the absences. Teachers are used to dealing with planned and unplanned absences. Everyone who is participating is encouraged to alert their teacher the week before for planning purposes. A standard letter is provided below for parents to print or email to their teachers about their pending absence. If you are worried about disruption to your teachers’ day, we encourage you to send your kids at 10:30 after attendance is taken.
We are drawing attention to this matter because the Board is so proud of its reputation. We believe that funding the intermediate school at TIC will ultimately hurt the District’s reputation and ratings much more than a two-day absence. Every unexcused absence costs the District roughly $35 per day. To be very clear, the intention of this No Attendance Strike is to demonstrate the strong voice that we, as parents, have.
No, the original plan was to use the $466 MM from the 2021 Bond to build 4 new schools. One of the schools was an Elementary School to reduce overcrowding at the 3 Creekside Park Elementary Schools.
Here is the presentation showing how the Bond money would be spent.
This is not how TISD is trying to use the money today.
Nothing should happen as long as you are not exceeding your allotted absences. If your principal tries to retaliate on you or your child for voicing your First Amendment right you can report them to the TEA.
Attendance rates are not used as an indicator to generate ratings. The attendance rate is an indicator evaluated when determining distinctions but it is not used for ratings. Your schools ratings will not be impacted.
More information can be found here.
The Texas Education Administration’s (TEA) Finance Department has confirmed for us that funding is done at the District level, not by school. Some people in the Administration have tried to tell parents otherwise, they are incorrect.
If your child has access to a computer, they can log on to ClassLink and will have access to the same programs that they have at school. Use the day as a learning experience. If you attend the protest, teach your child about the right to assemble peacefully! It is not the duty of the teacher to assign work beforehand, but you can work with your teacher to make sure that all the work that needs to be done gets done. Also, if you are concerned about missed instructional time, send your child in at 10:30am after attendance is taken.
You are standing up for your rights. This might cause a bit of disruption, but the disruption is certainly less than the disruption that will be caused by placing the new Intermediate outside of Creekside.
It's also worthing noting that a lot of the teachers live in Creekside and will be affected by this change. The teachers have been told not to discuss this issue and are not allowed to strike. They are depending on you to voice your concerns!
We don’t think this is a waste of time at all. The Woodlands Township is putting a lot of pressure on TISD to look for alternatives, so we need to unite and make them aware that we as parents are going to demand alternatives. The board has not yet voted to fund the intermediate school at this location, so it is not a done deal. If the parents and The Township can all put pressure on TISD we believe that this might be enough to make an impact. We have heard several people say that they will move, homeschool, or consider private school. If people are going to such extreme measures, isn’t it first better to try a two day attendance strike and protest?
In this case we suggest that you quietly participate by keeping your kids home. Make dentist, doctor, or flu shot appointments for them on these days if you don’t want to take a public stand. An excused absence still benefits this cause. You can participate quietly by keeping your kids home from school.
This would be a case in which we ask that you quietly participate. Take a long weekend, sleep in and send your child late, go out for a fun breakfast, or just take a mental health day. Your children do not need to be involved in any of the protests. But this does ultimately impact your child greatly, so we still suggest you participate, whether you choose to do so quietly or not is up to you.
Absolutely! We do not want this protest to impact any of these things. Parent involvement is one of the many things we love about our school and community, sadly, parent involvement may decline at the new intermediate school if it is moved to the TIC location. Many people who are participating are active volunteers at the school. We suggest asking a friend to watch your children so you can still fulfill your volunteer obligations, or even bringing your kids with you for whatever you have those days and then keep them out the rest of the day.
